6 Days Wild Life Primate Safari

The wildlife of Uganda is composed of its flora and fauna. Uganda has a wide variety of different habitats, including mountains, hills, tropical rainforest, woodland, freshwater lakes, swamps and savanna with scattered clumps of trees. The country has a biodiverse flora and fauna reflecting this range of habitats and is known for its primates, including gorillas and chimpanzees. On this six-day wildlife and primate safari we take you to Uganda’s most popular tourist destinations; queen Elizabeth and Bwindi impenetrable national parks. The two national parks lie in the Albertine rift which is the western branch of the east African rift, covering parts of Uganda, the democratic republic of the congo (DRC), Rwanda, and they are home to critically endangered mountain gorillas as listed by the IUCN in 2018. Mountain gorillas only live in the dense vegetation of Uganda’s Bwindi and along the dormant volcanic Virunga mountain range that stretches across Rwanda’s volcanoes national park, Uganda’s mgahinga gorilla national park, and Virunga national park in the democratic republic of the congo. The lift valley is also home to the tree climbing lions of ishasha southern sector of queen Elizabeth national park. It is somewhat uncommon for lions to actually climb trees. There are no more than 2 populations in whole world of such lions that do actually climb trees as one of their day after day behaviour. One of these populations is found within the ishasha sector which is found in the south part of the well-known queen Elizabeth national park within Uganda. The other population is found in lake manyara national park in the southern part of Tanzania.

TRANSFER TO QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

Queen Elizabeth National Park is understandably Uganda’s most popular tourist destination. The park’s diverse ecosystems, which include sprawling savanna, shady, humid forests, sparkling lakes and fertile wetlands, make it the ideal habitat for classic big game, ten primate species including chimpanzees and over 600 species of birds. Set against the backdrop of the jagged Rwenzori Mountains, the park’s magnificent vistas include dozens of enormous craters carved dramatically into rolling green hills, panoramic views of the Kazinga Channel with its banks lined with hippos, buffalo and elephants, and the endless Ishasha plains, whose fig trees hide lions ready to pounce on herds of unsuspecting Uganda kob. As well as its outstanding wildlife attractions, Queen Elizabeth National Park has a fascinating cultural history. There are many opportunities for visitors to meet the local communities and enjoy storytelling, dance, music and more. The gazetting of the park has ensured the conservation of its ecosystems, which in turn benefits the surrounding communities. After morning breakfast, check out and begin our journey of about 9 hours’ drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park which is in the western part of Uganda. There shall be a stopover for an enroute lunch. Upon reaching the park, check in to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

After early breakfast, embark on an early morning game drive to the north of the park where the open grasslands of Kasenyi provide QENP’s primary game viewing area, thanks to resident herds of Uganda kob and the lions that prey on them. kasenyi offers virtually guaranteed buffalo, antelope and elephant sightings, along with warthogs and baboons. Taking an early morning drive or at dusk is the most successful way to track down a pride of lions, and maybe even the odd leopard.

ISHASHA FOR TREES CLIMBING LIONS AND LATER TRANSFER TO BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK

After morning breakfast, drive for Ishasha for game drive. Later have lunch and your safari continues to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Travelling via Ishasha - subject to road conditions - you can observe the unusual behavior exhibited by the tree-climbing lions. The Ishasha Sector is actually today very famously because of its mystifying population of the tree-climbing lions that are a very exceptional attraction and as well one of the major highlights for which most guests visit this park. The Lions are normally seen lazily lying up within the branches of the huge fig trees staring down at the numerous Uganda Kobs that are graze in the open Ishasha plains – and these are actually the main prey to these lions. In case you ever find yourself being chased by a lion, choosing to climb up into the trees as a way to escape from it will actually not help much especially within Queen Elizabeth National Park since these Lions have the ability to climb up into the trees. Actually, they are commonly seen sleeping on branches in the afternoon as they digest their food after lunch. This is a journey of about 4 hours’ drive through the rapidly changing landscape to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Dinner and overnight at a lodge.

BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK

After an early morning breakfast, you will drive to the park headquarters for registration and to join others for a gorilla trekking briefing about the dos and the don’ts during your gorilla trek. Once this is done, you will set off for gorilla tracking. Trekking through the steep, densely forested hills and then finally coming across the gorillas camouflaged in the vegetation is an inspiring and privileged moment. Tracking in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest requires stamina and can often take most of the day depending on the movements of the gorillas in search of food. On your trek, you are likely to spot other primates, birds, and rare tree species. After finding the gorillas, you will be allowed to spend one hour with gorillas observing them and taking photos before trekking back to the park headquarter. This is indeed an extraordinary feeling being with these beautiful yet endangered creatures. The afternoon is for transferring to Lake Bunyonyi for dinner and overnight at lodge.
